What to expect when you visit an emergency clinic

We get it, going to a new dentist when you're in pain can be super nerve-wracking. But don't worry, our partners are totally committed to making your visit as comfortable as possible. Let us tell you how.

You can reach both clinics 24/7 by phone, you need to have your BSN number at reach, you introduce yourself as a patient of HDC Clinic or Helmi's Dental Care. The receptionist will give you an appointment and ask details of your emergency.

You need to take an identification card with you to the appointment. Our colleagues will stabilize the situation and relieve the pain so we can finalize the treatment at our own clinic.

You will be asked to pay by pin directly after your emergency treatment, pricing is the same as in our clinic with the exception of additional fees for treatments after 6 p.m. and in the weekends or holidays. Your insurance will reimburse your costs once you send them a copy of the invoice.

Children under 18 years don't need to pay at the venue, their invoice is sent directly to the insurance company.

The appointments are in 30 minute time slots so on busy days it could be that you are seen later in the evening and other urgent trauma cases are pushed forward.

In no show cases you will be charged accordingly by the clinic.

The clinic will send us a report directly after your visit so we can followup the treatment.

What to do in an emergency

1

Dental Trauma

In case of an accident a tooth can either break or fall out completely.

If the tooth has fallen out you need to grab the tooth by its crown and NOT the root. Try and clean it with your saliva in your mouth and if that is not possible use milk. Do not rinse with water, this reduces the survival rate of the tooth.

Once cleaned, try and place the tooth back in its place, if you can't manage then keep it moist between your tongue and cheek or in some milk. Contact emergency help. The tooth can be replaced and splinted within 45 minutes of the accident.

If the tooth is broken you will be asked whether it's bleeding or not, if you see a red dot in the tooth then the nerve has been damaged. If  the tooth feels wobbly or is misplaced you can try and reposition it directly. You will be given an emergency appointment and the tooth will receive emergency care.

In case of dental trauma in children it's best to seek emergency help, even if that just involves a consultation.

2

Tooth ache

If a tooth is giving pain on a regular base it's best to seek help. This can change into continuos pain within days, waking you up in the middle of the night.

Over the counter pain killers will only relieve the pain slightly and a cold compress is needed once the infection progresses.

The next stage will be inflammation and swelling with pus concentrate.

Should this happen in the lower jaw you need to seek immediate help as we don't want the airway to be blocked by swelling.

Emergency help will be initial root canal treatment which needs to be finished at our clinic within 3 weeks.

You might be given additional antibiotics, please inform the clinician in case you have antibiotic allergies. In extreme cases of swelling it is common to relieve pressure with a small incision.

3

Broken tooth or damaged crown

It can happen to anyone, a broken tooth when biting into food or losing a porcelain crown or implant crown.

For broken teeth, if the tooth is hypersensitive to temperature or feels sharp its best to book an emergency appointment, if not, you can wait for a regular appointment at our own clinic.

If you lose an implant crown or porcelain crown you need to have these put back within a day to save the tooth or implant. Make sure to save any fallen out pieces and take them to the appointment.

The clinician will take an xray before restoring the teeth.
